Chandni Chowk – the Mughal era arcade designed by Shah Jahan’s daughter Jahanara, will get a major facelift with its first major commercial development in three centuries. This will also emerge as a new landmark of Chandni Chowk.
Chandni Chowk is today the largest wholesale and retail market in Asia. This historic market is bustling at its seams with long traffic jams and clogged lanes and by-lanes where pedestrians, motorised and non-motorised vehicular traffic jostle for space.
A massive redevelopment project is underway in Chandni Chowk to improve accessibility, ease traffic and provide basic amenities for visitors to the market. The redevelopment work has started from December 2018 and is expected to be completed by December 2020. A key component of the redevelopment project is a multi-level parking and a new commercial space being developed under PPP project between North MCD and Omaxe – one of India’s leading real estate companies.
Development work of this scale has never been undertaken in Chandni Chowk in centuries. The upcoming commercial complex is the first such commercial development and will be a huge boost for business and shoppers footfall which have so far been stymied by infrastructure deficiencies and lack of basic amenities and convenience. Based on the Mughal era theme, it will offer spectacular pieces of architecture including interior and exterior, mouth-watering variety of food and a living, breathing piece of history. Being developed as a new landmark in the heart of Chandni Chowk, the interior is inspired by surrounding architecture.
At present many shops and establishments in Chandni Chowk are said to be unauthorised and unorganised which keep many traders live under constant fear of sealing drive, fire and other hazards. A commercial development now will not only enhance facilities and features for shoppers while maintaining the aesthetics of Chandni Chowk, but will also plug the existing deficiencies that traders currently face. Also this gives a huge opportunity to many local traders and manufacturers supplying in Chandni Chowk since decades to make their presence felt in an organised set up.
The upcoming commercial complex in Gandhi Maidan is a one of a kind development for the area and will offer parking space for over 2100 vehicles and over 80 tourist buses in three levels of underground and two level of over ground parking on the 3rd and 4th floor. The ground and 1st floor will be for retail activities and the second floor is dedicated to food court and fine dining serving delicacies from across India and Chandni Chowk.
